Chapter Nine

“I can explain,” Cameron stated.

Samie grabbed the desk chair, turned it around and straddled it, resting her arms on its back. “Oh please, do,” she said with a grin.

“So, this is...uh...Jon,” said Cameron, sheepishly.

“Oh, I know,” she said.

“He's the, uh...Kurokaze cosplayer,” Cameron continued.

Samie eyed the costumes strewn about on the floor. “Figured that out too.”

Jon blushed. “You work at the coffee shop too.”

Samie nodded. “I work at the coffee shop too.”

“You make better lattes than the other girl,” he muttered.

“Thank you,” she said. “So.” She looked back to Cameron. “Am I interrupting anything?”

Cameron shook his head. “No, we, uh... just finished.”

“And what did you forget to do?”

“I forgot to send the 'I'm getting laid' message,” he responded.

“And what happens when someone forgets to send the 'I'm getting laid' message?”

Jon looked away from Samie. “I can go if it's a problem that I'm here.”

She waved him off “Oh, no, no, no, sweetie,” she said. “You didn't forget. You're fine and dandy.”

“What do you want?” Cameron asked as he dug through his clothing to find his wallet.

“Orange soda,” she said as she reached into her backpack and pulled out a permanent marker. “You remembered your hand sanitizer to get this off, right?”

“Yeah.”

She beckoned him closer. He bent down and she started to draw on his face. She drew hearts and stars on his cheeks and the words “I got some! High five me!” on his forehead. She capped her marker. “You're so lucky the party wing isn't open on night one. Go put on some clothes.”

“So, I never thought I'd see you here,” Samie said, directed toward Jon as Cameron went into the bathroom to change.

“To be fair? Me neither.”

“Ugh, it's weird hearing you talk. You normally say like...nothing. It's weird because I kind of know you? Kind of. Not as much as Cameron. I mean, clearly. I'm Samie.”

Cameron smiled softly as he pulled on his pajama pants and threw a shirt on over his head. “Jon, you want anything?”

“I'm good,” he said.

“I'll be back.”

“Bye, Cam!” As soon as he left, Samie turned back to Jon. “So, you and Cam, huh?”

“I suppose,” he replied.

“You suppose? When did he figure out who you are?”

Jon turned and looked at the alarm clock. “About a half hour ago.”

Samie's eyes went wide. “Why didn't you tell him?”

“I didn't recognize him without the beard. If I wasn't already in the room, I wouldn't have...”

“Wouldn't have what?” Samie asked, glaring at him intently.

“Come up here to sleep with him,” he said with a sigh, running his hand through his hair.

“Yeah, well you did. Do you have any idea how into you he is? You're going to crush him and I, in turn, will crush you. You son of a...”

“It's not like that!” Jon countered. “I like him too! I've wanted to ask him out for months, but I didn't know how.”

“What do you mean you didn't know how?”

Jon shrugged. “Well, I couldn't ask him out for coffee. That would be stupid. And that's pretty much where my knowledge of flirting ends.
